Essaouira

  • 25/08/2020

In December 2001, UNESCO listed the Essaouira Medina as a World Heritage Site. This prestigious distinction was intended to enable the city’s historic monuments, according to the UNESCO Charter, to receive the highest attention from the city’s authorities and those responsible for culture. December 2011, ten years later, the observation is edifying. Most of the city’s monuments are in a deplorable state, others have been deliberately destroyed or distorted for other lucrative purposes.

5 things to do or visit in Essaouira

1-  Essaouira of  Medina

Formerly known as Mogador, is an exceptional example of a fortified city in the middle of the XVIII century, surrounded by a Vauban-style wall, his kasbah is also a wonder to remember.

2- Essaouira port

Since the seventeenth century, activity has been in full swing, but archeological excavations have detected a Phoenician maritime activity since the second century. Today, the sardine is king and is the delight of the city's inhabitants and restaurants.

3- The beaches

There are a long stretch of sand near Essaouira. Their presence gives the opportunity to relax or to carry out many sports activities.

4- The souk

On the stalls of Laghzal souk, merchants sell their fragrant spices and herbalists more or less effective remedies. Nearby, do not forget to walk the paths of the souk with fish.

5- Sidi-Mohammed-ben-Abdellah museum

Set in a building with a patio built in the 19th century, this museum houses magnificent collections of antique pieces. You will see sumptuous jewelry, weapons, musical instruments or even carpets made by local tribes.
